My family is without doubt the most important thing in my life.
I was blessed to be brought up by very loving parents who made sure that my twin sister, brother and I knew that we were loved not by what they said but by what they did. My fondest memories as a child are of swimming in the sea and making mud pies in the garden.
On leaving school I took a Business Studies degree and became a Personnel Manager with Debenhams. I spent the next 20 years as a Personnel Manager in retailing and the NHS before becoming self-employed as a Development and Training Consultant. By now I was almost 40 and decided I’d better find the man I’d been waiting for and I did! We were married in 6 months and our son was born 2 years later – he’s now a teenager.
Music has always been an important part of my life. I can’t remember a time when I haven’t belonged to a choir whether with the school, the church, a choral society or just ladies. I always feel better for being in the fresh air and particularly enjoy walking by the sea or in the woods. I like to exercise by playing tennis and swimming and love skiing though nowadays I’m happy to stick to dry ski slopes.
When I was young part of our routine was to go to church on a Sunday, initially to Sunday school, then progressing to Junior Church and finally Family Eucharist. I carried on attending as an adult until I reached my forties when I began to question why I was going and realised it was simply because I’d always gone. Time to stop, I decided, and see what might replace it.
It was another 10 years, however, before I heard about the Interfaith training and knew I had to do it. It was a challenging and liberating 2 years during which we studied the major religions and were taught to create and conduct ceremonies. We also learned to counsel others in a way that enables them to connect with their inner wisdom, joy and peace.
In 2005 I was ordained an Interfaith Minister.
I believe in one God whatever word we choose to use. The motto of the Interfaith Foundation is ‘One Truth – Many Ways.’
